UNICEF Innocenti is recruiting a qualitative-research consultant for a mixed-methods project examining how children in China experience and understand relational AI systems. The project begins with consultation workshops involving children and later moves to a quantitative survey that will deepen the findings and support practical recommendations.
The consultant will shape the qualitative methodology, advise the local research partner, review findings, oversee analytical quality and prepare a UNICEF Innocenti report. The assignment is remote and is expected to require about 115 working days spread across 16 months.
What you will work on
- Design a child-appropriate qualitative methodology for consultation workshops on children’s interactions with AI.
- Support project setup, research design and piloting in coordination with UNICEF China, UNICEF Innocenti and the local partner.
- Guide or review child consultations, qualitative analysis and quality-control processes.
- Contribute to engagement with the project’s expert advisory group and incorporate technical feedback.
- Write a complete research report presenting the analysis, discussion, conclusions and policy or programme recommendations.
Who should consider applying
- A master’s degree in a relevant social-science or technology discipline; a bachelor’s may be accepted with additional relevant experience.
- At least five years of professional qualitative-research experience related to technology or children’s issues.
- Experience designing methodologies, supporting child consultations, analyzing qualitative data and writing reports.
- Fluent English is required. Chinese, research experience with children, familiarity with AI or digital protection, and work in the Chinese context are assets.
